*Barry: Biblical Visions of Inclusivity and Diversity
During the years after the Babylonian exile when leaders like Ezra and Nehemiah were excluding those they deemed “other” from the Jerusalem community, the authors of Job, Ruth, Jonah, and Isaiah 56-66 emphasized foreigners’ devotion to God and God’s embrace of all people. Session One How do we understand Jesus Patterned Biblical Spirituality and some key terms and resources for our Grace Journeys Conversations? Referencing authors Philip Yancey, Kate Bowler, Sarah Bessey, Rob Bell, and Peter Enns.
Session Two What does Jesus Patterned Biblical Spirituality look like in the Bible? Correcting our interpretative lens for experiencing God in our lives and reconstructing and re-purposing our faith. Referencing author Brian McLaren.Need talk title and show notes from Richard
Session Three If believing that God’s purpose for Jesus’ dying is as a necessary blood ransom for my sin isn’t working for me any more, how is Jesus my Savior? Explore Jesus as Savior through surprise, awe, wonder, surrender, and vulnerability to become more like him. Referencing authors Phyllis Tickle, Danielle Shroyer, and Richard Rohr.
Session Four How can we respond to so many today (perhaps us) feeling skeptical of the institutions and traditions associated with central values like faith, patriotism, and family? Can we move from religious traditions of certainty and rewards for obedience and appearances towards a paradoxical understanding of the recurring biblical themes of exodus, wilderness, and promised land (discussed here in three historical occurrences in the Bible)? Referencing Thomas Merton.
Session Five Once when I worked as a character and spiritual life educator for a Christian organization I was told that I could hire speakers as part of my work but that “they had to be between the forty yard lines” (referring to midfield on an American football field). The instructions meant that any speakers I hired couldn’t be controversial or really anywhere but solidly in hte middle and inoffensive to anyone. As I reflected on it, it occurred to me that in sports there are a lot of things you could do from midfield, but scoring is not usually one of them. This session discusses our need to be “playing” way beyond the forty yard lines, because that alone defines the Jesus pattern. No where, at any time, is Jesus seen playing at midfield. The Holy Spirit, featured in a discussion of Acts 9:36 – 10:48, pursues Jesus’ game plan. Referencing robbell.com.
Session Six According to Matthew 5:23-24, God treasures above all else — including the worship of God — how we treat one another. How does this Jesus pattern of biblical spirituality inform the economic issues of our time regarding fair wages, income inequality, care for those on the margins, sharing of wealth, provision of health, and the massive changes that artificial intelligence is bringing to the employment landscape? Can we look beyond just the ethics to the motives and animating spirituality behind our actions of justice? Referencing “A New Purpose for the Corporation,” Fortune, September, 2019.
